Weather forecast for Rescobie Loch, Angus.

26th September 2011

The fishing at Rescobie Loch has picked up again after a short period in the doldrums. Limit baskets and smiling faces once more. Some really good blue trout have been giving a few lucky anglers a bit of extraordinary sport and some excellent browns have been weighed in.
W. Johnston (Blairgowrie) held out to take August's Fish of the Month with his 9lb 8oz rainbow. Fish of the Month for September is so far tied with G. Cheetham (Monifieth) and J. Shepherd (Forfar) both weighing in 9lb rainbows.
Other possible contenders were, C. Martin (Dundee) with a brown of 7lb 8oz , T. Hale (Forfar) a rainbow of 6lb 8oz and Mr Joe (Dundee) came within ounces of getting on the leader board with a fine 8lb 12oz rainbow in his 4 for 18lb 8oz.
The fish are still well up in the water and are responding to most lures, traditionals and buzzers. There are no particular hot spots with fish being taken from all over the loch.

Some recent bank successes were, D. Scott (Dundee) 4 for 8lbs, G. Smith (Arbroath) 4 for 8lb 8oz, G. Burnett (Arbroath) 4 for 10lb 8oz, F. Keith (Dundee) 4 for 11lb 4oz, S. Thomson (Arbroath) 4 for 9lb 8oz and J. Moseley (Arbroath) 4 for 11lbs.
From the boats, H. Anderson (Dundee) 4 for 8lbs, P. Nicoll (Forfar) 4 for 9lb 4oz, B. Garthlay (Dundee) 4 for 15lb 8oz, A. Taylor (Forfar) 4 for 7lb 8oz, A. Smith (Dundee) 4 for 10lbs, A. Paterson (Brechin) 4 for 8lb 4oz, P. Greig (Dundee) 4 for 10lbs and A. Fyall (Arbroath) 4 for 17lb 4oz.

22nd August 2011

The fish at Rescobie Loch are presently feeding just under the surface and are keen to chase the fly. They are not so keen on actually taking as many anglers have reported seeing huge bow waves following their retrieve only to turn away at the last moment. Frustrating but exciting stuff! Small traditional flies are doing well but it may take a while to find the preferred colour. There are no particular hot spots as fish are being taken from all parts of the loch.
R. Smith (Arbroath) held out to take Gows' Fish of the Month for July with his 9lb 12oz rainbow and presently on the leader board for August is W. Johnston (B'gowrie) with one at 9lb 8oz.
Some nice brown trout have come off recently including A. Wood (Forfar) 5lb 8oz, A. Burnett (Arbroath) 5lb 8oz and S. Morrison (Arbroath) 6lbs plus a rainbow of 8lb 8oz on the same session. Some other decent rainbows were C. Munro (Forfar) 6lbs, G. Alexander (I'gowrie) 6lb 7oz and S. Thomson (Arbroath) 7lb 8oz.

Goodlet (Forfar) 4 for 9lb 10oz, J. Henderson (Montrose) 4 for 9lb 12oz and D. Milne (Arbroath) 4 for 11lbs.

24th July 2011

After being in the doldrums for a week or two the fishing at Rescobie Loch is picking up again. There have been some really good evening rises and top of the water sport is good with the fish keen to take the dry fly.
Sometimes one has to resort to lures but the Dunkeld, Shiphams, Diawl Bach, Kate McLaren and a variety of buzzers have been doing well.
The leader board for Gows Fish of the Month is changing almost daily. G. Burnet (Arbroath) had one at 7lbs in his 4 for 22lbs, D. Nicoll (Arbroath) had one at 8lbs in his 3 for 12lbs, A. Paterson (Brechin) had one at 9lbs in his 4 for 21lbs, G. Smith (Arbroath) had one at 8lb 8oz in his 4 for 16lbs and G. Austin (Erroll) had one at 7lb 8oz. Leading the field at the moment is R. Reith (Arbroath) 4 for 7lb 12oz and J. Shepherd (Forfar) 4 for 8lbs.

4th July 2011

Fishing at Rescobie Loch has been described by some anglers as rather challenging of late, how some others describe it is another matter altogether !
There are still limit baskets coming off but they are fewer than the norm. Quite a lot of brown trout in the 3 to 5lb range are being taken and A. Munro (Forfar) had 2 at 7lb 8oz each in his bag of 4 for 23lb 8oz from off the Fonah bank.
Competition for Gows Fish of the Month has really hotted up with J. Malloch (Letham) taking the prize with an 8lb 10 rainbow.

Some other decent fish G. Lamond (Arbroath) 6lb 8oz, C. Learnmonth (Dundee) 6lb 4oz, F. Franeschi (Montrose) 9lbs, S. Thomson (Arbroath) 6lb 5oz, W. Mudie (Birkhill) 7lb brown, L. Coxon (B. Ferry) 6lb10oz, R. Fraser (Letham) 7lb 8oz, G. Smith (Arbroath) 8lb 12oz and 6lb 4oz , A. Burnett (Arbroath) 7lb and 7lb 8oz and W. Taylor (Brechin) 10lbs. The biggest fish was taken by T. Melville (B'gowrie) but being a non-member it does not qualify.

13th June 2011

The mixed weather of late does not appear to have affected the fishing at Rescobie Loch. Many anglers are reporting success on the dry fly even when there were no fish showing. Sedge imitations seem to be doing particularly well.
Traditional flies and lures such as the Damsel are also doing well. A Young (Monifieth) held out to take Gows Fish of the Month for May with his 8lb 13oz rainbow and already competition is fierce for June. J. Myles and D. Milne (Arbroath) both had 5lb fish then F. Keith (Dundee) had one at 6lb 4oz as did J. Malloch (Letham). G. Irvine (Forfar) topped that with one at 6lb 10oz which was trumped by A. Fraser (Brechin) with 6lb 12oz. J. Mowatt (Forfar) took one at 7lbs which was beaten by S. Morrison (Arbroath) with 7lb 4oz. He in turn was beaten by J. Craig (Brechin) with 7lb 8oz who was then beaten by B. Cox (Dundee) with 7lb 12oz. On the leader board at the moment is A. Burnett (Arbroath) and J. Moncur (Invergowrie) who both landed 8lb 8oz fish.

Some recent bank successes were, F. Keith (Dundee) 4 for 9lb 4oz, J. Campbell (Brechin) 4 for 10lb 4oz, G. Burnett (Arbroath) 4 for 12lb 8oz, K. Stewart (Arbroath) 3 for 13lbs, D. Watson (Brechin) 4 for 9lbs, J. Panton (Blair) 4 for 8lb 8oz, C. Walls (Monifieth) 4 for 10lb 12oz.

Fyall (Arbroath) 4 for 10lb 4oz, A. Paterson (Brechin) 4 for 13lbs, B. Cox (Dundee) 4 for 20lb 4oz and A. Wood (Forfar) 4 for 19lb 12oz.

30th May 2011

Despite the high winds of late the fish at Rescobie have been providing great sport. Getting them to take hasn't been too much of a problem, getting them to stay on is another matter. Various lures such as Cat's whisker, Damsel, Dancers of various colours have been taking fish as have buzzers and small traditionals like Kate McLaren. The fish are not far down and Intermediate lines are getting the flies to them. The fish are well spread out, but the middle of the loch seems favourite at present - if you can get your anchor to hold!
Drew Young's 8lb 13lb rainbow is still top of the leader board for Gows' Fish of the month.

Some recent bank successes were, G. Irvine (Forfar) 4 for 8lb 4oz, G. Smith (Arbroath) 4 for 10lb 8oz, G. Armstrong (Montrose) 4 for 9lbs, F. Keith (Dundee) 4 for 13lb 8oz, W. Smith (Birkhill) 3 for 6lb 8oz, W. Mudie (Birkhill) 3 for 8lb 6oz, D. Watson (Brechin) 4 for 10lbs,R. Panton (Blair) 4 for 10lb 8oz and D.M Smith (Arbroath) 4 for 8lb 8oz.
From the boats, P. Whyte (Forfar) 4 for 9lbs, M. Jarrett (Arbroath) 4 for 13lbs, A. Brewster (Forfar) 4 for 10lb 14oz, D. Halley (Fife) 4 for 9lb 12oz, J. Westland (Montrose) 4 for 11lb 12oz, D. Ashe (Forfar) 4 for 7lb 8oz and M. McCrum (Montrose) 4 for 9lb 12oz

2nd May 2011

Excellent sport has been had at Rescobie Loch of late with quite a few Blues being taken. Whilst they are only around the two pound mark when you hook one you know all about it. They put up a fantastic fight, similar; it is said, to a sea trout.
Hare's Lug, Kate McLaren and Buzzers are taking a lot of fish with Cat's Whisker and Damsels also doing quite well. They are still lying down a bit but some rises are still being witnessed when that chill east wind drops.
Neil Husker's 8lb 8oz rainbow has been knocked off the Gows' Fish of the Month leader board by R. Gray (Montrose) with one at 10lb 11oz which held on until the end of the month.. Some other decent fish coming of were G. Smith (Arbroath) 6lbs, R. Fraser (Letham) 7lbs, S. McGregor (Arbroath) 7lb 4oz, C. Thornton (Montrose) 7lbs and R. Low (Carnoustie) 6lb 12oz. None member B. Taylor (Buckie) had one at 11lb 12oz.

Some recent bank successes were, C. Munro (Forfar) 4 for 9lb 8oz, J.McFarlane (Kirrie) 4 for 10lb 8oz, S. Thomson (Arbroath) 4 for 10lbs, R. Kilhams (Forfar) 4 for 8lb 12oz, W. Massie (Forfar) 4 for 10lb 8oz and G. Gall (Arbroath) 4 for 8lb 8oz.
From the boats, L. Anderson (Invergowrie) 4 for 10lbs, D. Blythe (Lour) 4 for 9lb 12oz, G. Austin (Errol) 4 for 14lb 8oz, K. Shepherd (Forfar) 4 for 12lb 8oz, M. Stobbs (Carnoustie) 4 for 11lbs, A. Turner (Forfar) 4 for 8lb 12oz, R. Ferguson (Forfar) 4 for 10lb 8oz, J. Westland (Montrose) 4 for 9lbs, A. Patterson (Brechin) 4 for 8lb 4oz and D. Robertson (Brechin) 4 for 8lbs.

18th April 2011

After a spell of lying deep and refusing everything offered to them the fish at Rescobie Loch are back in taking mood with some decent baskets coming off. There were quite a few contenders for Gows' Fish of the Month for March with S. Thomson's (Arbroath) 12lb 8oz fish beating off competition from A. McIntosh (Forfar) 10lb 12oz, R. Smith (Arbroath) 10lb 8oz and D. Nicoll (Arbroath) 11lb 4oz. On the leader board for April is N. Husker (Arbroath) with one at 8lb 8oz. Last weekend saw the annual competition between the Scottish Junior International team and the best that Rescobie Loch could muster from its ranks. Suffice to say that the 21 - 7 score line bolstered the Juniors' self confidence no end.
Buzzers are taking a lot of fish but so too are Cormorants - the feathered variety that is! Whist there are no particular hotspots anglers are still favouring Drimmie and Condor so most fish are coming from those areas. Some really good evening rises have been witnessed with the fish readily coming to the fly.

Some recent bank successes were, J. Campbell (Brechin) 4 for 10lb 8oz, F. Keith (Dundee) 4 for 15lb 5oz, L. Paesano (Dundee) 4 for 9lb 12oz, G. Gall (Arbroath) 4 for 8lb 12oz, J. Moncur (I'gowrie) 4 for 9lbs and D.M. Smith (Arbroath) 4 for 8lb 8oz. From the boats, D. Murray (B' Ferry) 4 for 10lbs, M.McCrum (Montrose) 4 for 9lbs, B. Cox (Dundee) 4 for 7lb 8oz, P. Wilkie (Banchory) 4 for 12lbs, D. Blythe (Forfar) 4 for 8lb 10oz, A. Ramshaw (Montrose) 4 for 8lbs, M. Heenan (Forfar) 4 for 8lbs, R. Smith (Arbroath) 4 for 13lb 8oz, C. Thornton (Montrose) 4 for 10lb 12oz and J. Doyle (Montrose) 4 for 8lbs.

Opening day 2011

The thermometer reached a heady 3.5 degrees for a time on Opening Day at Rescobie and the rain stayed off until the boats had just left the boathouse. Despite this, around forty hardy souls ventured out, if only, in most cases, for a couple of hours. Historically Opening Day has not been kind weather-wise and this was no exception. However, nearly everyone caught fish, especially the bank anglers.
The fish were not particularly deep and were taking a huge variety of flies and lures although, as usual, black and green proved popular. Condor and Drimmie did very well. The biggest fish of the day from the boats was taken by Les Dickson (Montrose) who had one at 6lb 12oz in his 4 for 14lbs which included 2 browns for 5lb 8oz. From the bank, George Smith (Arbroath) had one at 6lbs in his 3 for 11lb 4oz.

Some other successes were, from the bank; W. Christie (Forfar) 2 for 4lbs, B. Clark (Arbroath) 4 for 8lb 2oz, S. Lawrence (Arbroath) 3 for 6lbs and D. Mollison (Dundee) had one at 5lb 8oz in his 4.
From the boats, G. Armstrong (Montrose) had 2 browns and a rainbow for 7lb 14oz, I. Goodlet (Forfar) 3 for 9lb 8oz, A. Paterson (Brechin) 2 for 7lb 8oz, Mr Joe (Dundee) 4 for 11lb 12oz, S. McGregor (Arbroath) 2 for 4lb 8oz and B. Cox (Dundee) 3 for 6lb 4oz.

11th November 2010

With the onset of colder weather the water clarity at Rescobie Loch has improved greatly over the past few weeks. Despite this the fish continue to be hard to tempt. Some limit bags are coming off but in the main anglers have to be content with two or three fish.
Much to his and everyone else's surprise G. Smith (Arbroath) held out to take Gows' Fish of the Month for September with his 7lb 8oz rainbow. On the leader board at the moment is B. Murchie (Errol) with his 7lb 8oz rainbow which beat A. Wood (Forfar) 6lb 8oz and D.M. Smith (Arbroath) 7lbs.
Although there are lots of fish showing on the surface they are mostly being taken further down on lures such as Yellow Dancer, Minkie, Zonker, Polar Bear and White Blob but the purists are still taking them on floating lines and buzzers.

Some recent bank successes were, G. Gall (Arbroath) 3 for 7lbs, J. McFarlane (Kirriemuir) 4 for 12lb 8oz, S. Thomson (Arbroath) 4 for 14lb 13oz, P. Hogan (Arbroath) 4 for 10lb 2oz, R. McLaren (Forfar) 3 for 7lbs, D.M. Smith (Arbroath) 3 for 10lb 8oz and C. Munro (Forfar) who had a 5lb brown in his 3 for 10lb 8oz.just before the brownie season ended.
From the boats, J. Westland (Montrose) 4 for 9lbs, S. Ferrier (Ardler) 4 for 9lb 8oz, W. Johnston (Blair) 4 for 13lb 8os, C. Duncan (L'kirk) 4 for 13lb 4oz, D. Robertson (Brechin) 4 for 12lb 4oz and G. Burnett (Dundee) 4 for 11lbs.

20th September 2010

Rescobie Loch has been proving quite hard over the past couple of weeks with many anglers coming off with ones and twos instead of limit catches. The more successful angler had to be prepared to go down a bit to tempt the fish. Favourite areas continue to be the Roadside Bank, Drimmie and Greenbank. Cormorants, Cats, Cove Nymphs, Crunchers, Connemara Blacks and Coachmen are all taking fish. The flies not taking fish all start with the same letter too !
Norrie Cargill (Arbroath) held out to take August's Gows Fish of the Month with his 9lb 8oz rainbow. Contenders for September were, S. Ferrier (Ardler) 6lb 8oz, A. Taylor (Buckie) 6lbs, A. McIntosh (Forfar) 6lb 7oz but on the leader board at the moment is G. Smith (Arbroath) 7lb 8oz.

Some recent success from the bank were, D. M. Smith (Arbroath) 4 for 9lbs, R. Clark (Arbroath) 4 for 9lb 8oz, S. Lorimer (Carnoustie) 4 for 10lb 12oz, G. Smith (Arbroath) 4 for 9lbs, G. Forbes (Stonehaven) 4 for 8lb 12oz and L. Smith (Dundee) 4 for 7lb 8oz.
From the boats, G. Soave (Forfar) 4 for 9lb 8oz , D. Robertson (Brechin) 4 for 8lb 8oz, L. Dickson (Montrose) 4 for 11lb 11oz, G. Austin (Erroll) 4 for 10lbs, W. Adams (Forfar) 4 for 9lbs, G. Higgins (Montrose) 4 for 9lb 4oz, B. Cox (Dundee) 4 for 9lbs and K. Shepherd (Forfar) 4 for 9lb 8oz

30th August 2010

The recent fall in water temperature and the water clarity is proving a hit at Rescobie Loch. Limit baskets are the order of the day for most anglers with some good evening rises to tempt the purists. Gows Fish of the month looks like being taken by Norrie Cargill (Arbroath) whose 9lb 8oz rainbow knocked Alistair Fraser's (Brechin) 9lb fish off the board. G. Burnett (Dundee) had one at 6lb 12oz, an unnamed angler with Discovery A/C had one at 10lb 6oz, J. Yule (Kirrie) had one at 7lbs J. Elliot (Stirling) had a brown of 6lb 4oz and S. Forgan (B' Ferry) had a brown of 5lb 14oz.
Buzzers still account for a lot of fish but slow fished lures are doing well although one angler was seen to do very well on the Roly Poly !
The amount of weed this season is restricting the bank anglers to certain areas but they are still catching fish.

Some recent success from the bank were, D. Nicol (Arbroath) had 3 for 6lbs, R. Clark (Arbroath) 3 for 6lb 8oz, P. Hogan (Arbroath) 4 for 10lb 2oz, S. Thomson (Arbroath) 4 for 8lb 12oz, P. Laing (Arbroath) 4 for 8lb 12oz and K. McIntosh (Forfar) 4 for 8lbs.
From the boats, J. Myles (Dunfermline) 4 for 12 lbs, A. Derick (K'caldy) 4 for 9lb 2oz, G. Alexander (Dundee) 4 for 7lb 4oz, W. Adams (Forfar) 4 for 8lb 8oz, D. Coull (Forfar) 4 for 9lbs, A. Paterson (Brechin) 4 for 10lb 12oz, D. Blythe (Lour) 4 for 13lbs and G. Burnett (Dundee) 4 for 8lb 8oz.

9th August 2010

Some really good fish have been coming off Rescobie of late. D. Watson (Brechin) had one at 8lb 12oz in his 4 for 14lb 12oz, N. Cargill (Arbroath) 1 at 7lbs in his 4 for 18lbs, R. Smith (Arbroath) 1 at 9lb 12oz in his 4 for 17lbs, M. Low (St Andrews) 1 at 6lbs in his 4 for 14lbs, R. McIntosh (Forfar) one at 9lb 12oz in his 4 for 16lb 8oz, and C. Nicoll (Arbroath) one at 10lbs in his 4 for 19lb 4oz. Despite that, A. Wood) Forfar nearly held on to July's Fish of the Month with his 10lb 14oz rainbow but was pipped at the post by J. Campbell (Brechin) who had a rainbow of 13lb 14oz in his basket of 4 for 21lb 12oz.
The fish are working just under the surface and Intermediate or Midge Tip lines are working well with buzzers or various lures. Damsels, Cormorants, Black Dancers and Minkies all get a mention. Fish are still being taken from all over the loch, weeds allowing, but the favourite areas appear to be off the Church or the Greenbank.

Some recent bank successes were, F. Keith (Dundee) 4 for 11lb 8oz, P. Hogan (Arbroath) 4 for 10lb 10oz, M. Heenan (Arbroath) 4 for 9lbs, S. Thomson (Arbroath) 4 for 10lb 4oz, and G. Higgins (Montrose) 4 for 8lbs.
From the boats, D. McPhail (Edzell) 4 for 7lb 12oz, D. Robertson (Brechin) 4 for 8lbs, R. McLaren (Blair) 4 for 10lb 12oz, A. Davidson (Forfar) 4 for 9lb 12oz, S. Nicoll (Arbroath) 4 for 8lb 13oz, C. Nicoll (Arbroath) 4 for 9lb 12oz, G. Dunbar (Arbroath) 4for 8lbs, S. Ford (Dundee) 4 for 9lb 4oz and J. Craig (Brechin) 4 for 12lb 8oz.
